Writing Cru Workshops

Workshops are a great way to get in your Writing Center requirement for your class. All of our workshops are interactive, so you must bring a current or past writing assignment with you, either on your laptop or printed out. Workshops can fit up to 12 students, and you should sign up ahead of time to ensure that your spot is reserved.

This workshop will teach you how to correctly format and cite sources in your paper according to MLA format.

In this workshop, we will go over the various aspects required in an APA paper: the title page, abstract (and keywords), running head and section headings. We will also look at the most common citations and you will be able to ask questions about to how to cite other works.

Chicago and Turabian

For this workshop, you should bring in a paper that needs to be in either Chicago or Turabian format. We will talk about the requirements involved with Chicago and Turabian, including the title page, layout, and bibliography. We will also discuss footnotes and endnotes and how each of these affects the style of your paper.

Clear and Concise Language

In this workshop we will work on strategies to help you make your sentences clear and concise. We will show you how grammar can help you be a more effective writer rather than a hindrance on your grade.

Strategies for Effective Essays

This workshop will cover effective strategies for improving your essays. Participants will choose from a choice of topics including strong thesis statements, cohesive paragraphs, and effective introductions and conclusions.

Peer Review

This workshop is for reviewing drafts of papers written in any discipline. During the workshop, first you will look over your own paper and check to see if you followed your professor's rubric. Then, you will trade papers with a partner and look over their essays for thesis statements, transition sentences, correct style, format, and also correct grammar. Please bring printed copies of a paper to the workshop.

Learn about the basic rules for punctuation. We will focus on commas: when to use them appropriately and when it is better to break the sentence up.

Come in with any essay and work on tips to develop your ideas and get started. We will work on creating an outline and help you defeat writer's block.

This workshop will cover the formatting, citations, and references rules used in biology courses.

Turning a Paper into a Presentation

In this workshop we will help you take a written paper and turn it into an effective oral presentation. We will cover some presentation tips and give people times to practice in small groups.

Timed Essay Strategies

This workshop focuses on helping you prepare to write while under pressure during an exam. We will teach you strategies to help you write great responses while you are budgeting your time.

Instructions for How to Sign-Up

To sign-up for your workshop, you will be signing into our scheduling system at the Writing Center. Follow these steps:

  1. Go to and sign-in using your OneLogin credentials.
  2. Fill out the new client form. You can choose how the system will notify you about appointments that you have created under the email options category. (If you have visited the Writing Center before, you may already be in the system and be able to skip this step).
  3. Click on the drop-down next to the dates and select “Workshop Schedule.”
  4. Click on the calendar icon next to “Next Week” and select the date of the workshop that you would like to attend. Make sure that you are signing up for the workshop that fits with the paper that you are working on.
  5. Click on the time that you would like to attend the workshop. If someone has already signed up for this time, the time slot will be bright blue. Up to 12 people may sign up for each workshop before it is full.
  6. Fill-out the form with all relevant information (form opens in a new window). Click on “Save Appointment." Your spot in this workshop will be reserved.
  7. If you have selected to receive email notifications, you will receive confirmation that you have made an appointment.
