Academically Speaking
- Academic Success – More than likely, reality has sunk in if your student did not perform as well as they would have liked during the fall semester. Some of the concerns they face include:
- How can I bring up my grade point average (GPA)?
- Will my spring classes be difficult and how can I make it through the difficult ones?
- Will I be able to keep my academic scholarships?
- Do I need to retake any classes to improve my GPA?
- (For those in athletics) Will I still be able to be on the team?
- What subjects do I need help with and where do I go for help?
- I seem to get anxious taking tests or have trouble paying attention. Is there a place on campus that can help me with this?
- Academic Progress – Some students are looking to the future. They are confident with their GPA goals and progression, but have some of the following concerns:
- Am I taking the classes that are basic requirements for most majors?
- I need to declare a major. What should I choose?
- Some professors have particularly inspired me. Are more of their classes available in obtaining my major goal?
- Do I need to ‘tweak’ my study skills? Should I study at a different time or in a different environment/location?
- Am I on track to graduate in a timely manner?
UMHB faculty and staff are devoted to helping your student answer the questions they face each semester. Our commitment to your student along with their commitment to their own future will help them achieve academic success. Obtaining a college degree is the main reason your student is in college. How can you help? Understanding the issues your student is facing is the first step in helping them achieve academic success. Your support, encouragement and belief that they have started down the right path and will complete their academic goals are essential. By working together, this can be a positive, successful academic semester for your student.
